Starting a dental career in Canada involves much more than clinical knowledge. New dentists must learn how dental offices operate, how associates are compensated, how to communicate with patients and team members, and how to manage the professional and financial responsibilities that come with practice. Designed for newly licensed dentists and internationally trained dentists entering Canadian practice, this practical course provides an overview of the real-world situations dentists commonly encounter during the early stages of their careers. Dr. Fatemeh Hosseinkhani draws on her experience as an associate dentist, practice owner, educator, and internationally trained dentist to share lessons that are rarely covered in dental school or licensing preparation programs. Participants will explore the structure of dental practice in Ontario, the responsibilities of different team members, associate agreements, office culture, insurance and billing, patient communication, informed consent, record keeping, referrals, and professional boundaries. The course also addresses how to recognize the right workplace, respond to difficult situations, manage mistakes and complications, and protect personal well-being. The session concludes with practical guidance on financial planning, taxes, insurance, debt management, disability protection, and sustainable career development.
